Teck Resources says the Highland Valley Copper mine just outside of Logan Lake is ramping up to full operations after being shut down by the Tremont Creek fire.
It had been ordered to evacuate on Sunday from that blaze, but work has now resumed.
The Tremont Creek fire threatened Logan Lake and Cherry Creek in recent days, but rain and cooler weather have helped calm that fire’s activity.
Cherry Creek is no longer on evacuation order. Logan Lake remains on order, but that could potentially be lifted this week. Paska Lake, Dominic Lake and Tunkwa Lake are also on order.
Highland Valley Copper, Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine, employs about 1,300 people.
Teck says it will continue to keep a close eye on the fire as well as wildfire smoke, saying it is “focused on protecting the health and safety of employees and contractors” at the mine, and “guidance will be updated as necessary.”
